Honiara International Airport is an airport on Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The airport is 8 kilometers away from the capital Honiara at a delta called Lunga Point.
Henderson Field was the name given by US soldiers to the landing field under construction by the Japanese occupiers of Guadalcanal Island when the Allied troops landed in the Solomon Islands in August 1942. The name was given by the Marines in honor of Major Air Force Officer Lofton Henderson, killed in combat months before in the Battle of Midway, the first naval aviator killed in combat in this battle.
For months Henderson Field was the central focus and symbol of the entire Battle of Guadalcanal. Since December 2003, the airport is officially named Honiara International Airport. American military units are still stationed at Honiara International Airport.
